FORT VALLEY, Ga. — Fort Valley State University (FVSU) is in mourning following the tragic loss of two of its students, sophomore Lalia “Princess” Gordon and senior Justice Toomer. The university announced the sad news on Friday via a post on its official Facebook page.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of two of our scholars,” the historically Black university (HBCU) stated. “While these losses did not occur at the same time, we recognize the collective grief they bring to the Wildcat family and want to honor each student and the impact they made on our University.”

Lalia Gordon, originally from Stockbridge, Georgia, was an Animal Science major with a passion for animals. At FVSU, she was an active member of multiple campus organizations, including Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS), the Royal Elite Modeling Troupe (REMT), and the PHASES Dance Troupe. She also interned at Critter Fixers Veterinary Hospital, demonstrating her dedication to animal science. The university described her as an enthusiastic and committed learner, whose vibrant presence on campus will be deeply missed.
Justice Toomer, a native of Warner Robins, Georgia, was a senior Psychology major and an honors scholar. She served as a residential assistant and was recognized for her leadership, academic excellence, and genuine care for others. FVSU honored her for making a meaningful impact on campus through mentorship and service, especially within the residential community.
FVSU President Dr. Paul Jones expressed his condolences, saying, “These losses weigh heavily on our University community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of our scholars and surround them with our thoughts and prayers.”
The university has reached out to the Henry and Houston County coroners to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the students’ deaths. During this difficult time, the Wildcat family stands united in grief, remembering the lives and legacies of Lalia and Justice.
